When I thought about how I'd put my spin on it, I knew I wanted to do some funny interactions between the clones, so that's how those ad libs came about.

Behind the scenes

The WNN Polka Archive had the opportunity to ask Anne a few questions [7]

How were you approached to perform the Polka?
I was emailed by Barry, who explained what World News Now and the World News Polka are. He asked me if I'd like to do an interpretation of it, and of course I said yes!
Were you aware your version would be re-aired multiple times, if so did you expect it to become a regular version?
I was not aware my version would be aired more than once, but I'm so happy that it has been! Even if my polka had only been on once, I'd still consider it among the coolest things I've ever done, so that fact that it became a semi-regular version is above and beyond!
How much creative freedom did ABC give you (for example you added snippets such as 'Be Professional' and 'Sit Down'?
Barry at World News Now told me to put my personal spin on the polka, which I did! The only thing I didn't have much flexibility on was the tempo, which could only vary so much as the polka needed to be a certain length to fit in the slot for it. When I thought about how I'd put my spin on it, I knew I wanted to do some funny interactions between the clones, so that's how those ad libs came about.

My version had to be submitted for ABC's approval, as I assume all versions are, but they didn't ask me to make any changes.

How did it feel for your cover to be broadcast on national TV?
It was such an honor to have my cover broadcast on national television. It's at the top of my list of accomplishments! Looking at the other artists who have done versions of the polka, I'm in amazing company. As a musician whose work and performances are mostly taking place online, my day-to-day can feel isolated. The World News Polka was one of those very special moments that reminded me that I'm not just releasing my videos into the void, and that you never knew who's watching! For everything bad we can say about the Internet, it also has an incredible power to connect us. I'm so thankful for the opportunity.

Why do you think the World News Polka format works so well with guest performers?

I think it goes back to Barry's original composition! It's simple musically, which frees artists from having to focus on making something technically impressive and allows us to use our imaginations while recreating the song in our own styles. The lyrics tell a story and invite us to have fun with it!
Is there anything about your World News Polka performance that you think viewers might not realise or appreciate at first glance?
I'm writing this in 2025, and I recorded my polka in 2018, so to be honest I don't remember! Over the years I've seen some people find the video on my YouTube channel after seeing it on World News Now, and I'm always thankful for the extra effort they've taken to seek out the video and let me know they enjoyed my polka!
